Giving Thanks For All

The air is crisp and cool. The scent of cinnamon, cloves and pumpkin fill our home. A few miles away at my sister's house, the smell of turkey and ham are already making mouths water. I awake, well rested, to see my early-bird son, standing before me. I smile and await the traditional greeting offered to loved ones on this day. I look fondly at the boy, so happy to share these precious moments with him. Sam tilts his head and offers, “Mom, my tooth fell in the toilet!”

I love my family. We are not bound by traditional holiday greetings (obviously). All across America, families will gather and exchange hugs and pleasantries. Well rehearsed stories will entertain, food will fill, and more than the turkey will end up stuffed.

On this day of Thanksgiving, I wonder. What are you thankful for? As I look around, my senses assist me in giving thanks. I see so much. A home, a pantry stocked with food, my five familiar favorites around. I hear children giggle, a guitar strumming and family members singing. I smell the familiar scents of the season. I feel the warmth of clothing. I am grateful.

Perhaps you share my blessings. Your heart of plenty overflows with thanksgiving.

However, maybe you see only what is missing this Thanksgiving. Loss of a home, income, or a loved one. One less place-setting. One less hug. More than just a tooth may be missing this year. Death can dampen the most festive of holidays...a cruel reminder to give thanks while you are able.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:19 NIV). Permit these ancient words to guide you, no matter what the holidays bring this year.

Seems hardly kind that God would urge us to give thanks for our losses. Yet, this verse seems clear. So, whether your heart is full or running on empty, allow God to fill you this Thanksgiving. Give thanks.
